How Many Cameras Do You Need?

Walk around your place and list every spot you want to see: entrances, cash counter, stock room, stairs, parking or gate. As a rough guide:

• Small shop: 2–4 cameras (entrance, counter, inside view, maybe stock area).
• Home or flat: 2–4 cameras (main door, gate or staircase, roof or back side).
• Office or showroom: 4–8 cameras, depending on rooms and entry points.
• School, factory or multi-floor building: 8 or more, usually better with IP cameras and an NVR.

Buy a recorder with a few spare channels. If you need four cameras today, a 4 channel DVR is enough; if you think you will add more, the 8 channel DVR costs only 1,058 Tk more.

DVR or NVR, and How Many Days of Recording?

Use a DVR with HD analog cameras and an NVR with IP cameras. The Hikvision 4 channel DVR can also take IP cameras (its listing says up to 5 IP channels), which gives some flexibility if you mix camera types later.

Recording days depend on the hard disk size, number of cameras, resolution, compression (H.265 saves space compared with H.264), and whether you record all day or only on motion. As a rough, conservative guide, four 2MP cameras recording around the clock on a 1TB hard disk usually keep about 10 to 25 days of footage, depending on settings and how much movement there is. Recording on motion only can keep footage longer. When the disk is full, the recorder overwrites the oldest footage.

A surveillance-rated hard disk is the better choice because it is made to write all day. Ask us which hard disk suits your recorder and how many days you need.

Choosing the Right Camera for Each Spot

• Indoor ceiling (shop, office): a turret camera like the Hikvision DS-2CE76D0T-LPFS looks neat and has a built-in mic.
• Outdoor wall, gate or parking: a bullet camera with IP67 weather protection, like the DS-2CE16D0T-LPFS or Dahua IP bullet.
• Wide room: a 2.8mm lens shows a wider area; 3.6mm shows a little less area but more detail at distance.
• Night view: check the IR range (20m to 30m on our cameras) against the distance you need to see in the dark.

Power cuts are common, so keep your recorder (and router, if you view on mobile) on a small UPS such as the Digital X 650VA offline UPS so recording does not stop every time the power goes.
