সংক্ষেপে: An ISP fiber technician needs a fusion splicer, a fiber cleaver, a fiber stripper, an optical power meter (OPM) and a visual fault locator (VFL), plus an OTDR for finding faults on longer lines. At Noakhali Tech, fiber splicing tools price in BD starts at Tk 1,500 for a stripper or VFL, and fusion splicers start at Tk 74,000.
Every FTTH connection your ISP sells depends on clean fibre work: a good splice, a flat cleave, a correct power reading at the customer's ONU. Cheap or missing tools turn a 20-minute job into a half-day callout. This fiber optic tools list for ISP technicians explains what each tool does, what to buy for a starter kit and a professional kit, and how to look after your tools, using the real products and prices we sell. If you are setting up an ISP from scratch, our ISP business equipment list covers the rest of the network.
What Each Fiber Tool Does
Fusion splicer
A fusion splicer joins two fibre ends permanently by aligning them and melting them together with an electric arc. It is the most important (and most expensive) tool in the kit. Splicers that align the fibre cores with several motors are generally more consistent than basic models, especially on trunk lines. A good fusion splice usually has very low loss, but the loss shown on the splicer screen is only an estimate; confirm important links with a power meter or OTDR. After splicing, the joint is protected with a heat-shrink sleeve in the splicer's heater.
Fiber cleaver
The cleaver cuts the bare glass fibre so the end is flat and square. A bad cleave is the most common cause of high splice loss or "bad cleave" errors on the splicer. Cleavers have a round blade with several positions; when cleave quality drops, you rotate to the next position.
Fiber stripper
A fiber stripper removes the outer jacket, the buffer and the thin coating to expose the bare glass without scratching it. A 3-hole stripper handles all three layers with one tool.
Optical power meter (OPM)
An OPM measures the light level arriving at the end of a fibre, in dBm. Technicians use it to check the signal at the customer's ONU, compare it with the reading at the splitter, and find which section is losing light. Set the meter to the right wavelength: GPON and EPON downstream use 1490 nm, upstream 1310 nm. Compare your reading with the receive range in the ONU's datasheet or your OLT's guidelines.
Visual fault locator (VFL)
A VFL shines a bright red laser (650 nm) into the fibre. Where the fibre is broken, sharply bent or a connector is bad, the red light leaks out and you can see it. It is the fastest way to find a fault inside a joint box, ODF or patch cord, and to check which fibre is which.
OTDR
An OTDR (optical time domain reflectometer) sends light pulses down the fibre and measures what comes back. It shows the distance to splices, connectors, bends and breaks, and the loss at each event, from one end of the line. The "event dead zone" is the minimum distance after one event before the OTDR can see the next, so a smaller number is better. OTDRs on PON lines with splitters need some experience to read, and you should not fire an OTDR into a live line connected to an OLT unless the model and manual say it supports live-fibre testing.
Copper tools: crimpers, testers, punch-down
ISP technicians still terminate a lot of Cat5e/Cat6: router-to-switch links, patch cables, CCTV and customer LAN runs. A crimping tool, a LAN tester and a punch-down tool are basic kit. Find these in our network tools category.

Starter Kit vs Professional Kit
Starter kit: FTTH drop and maintenance
For a new technician doing customer connections and fault calls on a small network, built from our products (current offer prices where an offer applies):
| Item | Our pick | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Fusion splicer | Jilong 500E Mini FTTx | Tk 74,000 |
| Cleaver | Etopel ET-20 | Tk 4,150 |

Without a splicer (for teams that use field-installable SC/UPC fast connectors on drop cables), the same kit comes to Tk 10,430. A separate VFL (Tk 1,500) is handy as a backup, since the OPM-22V's built-in VFL is 10 mW. Fast connectors, pigtails, adapters and joint boxes are in our fiber accessories category.
Professional kit: trunk lines and backbone
For senior technicians and teams that splice backbone and distribution cable and need to locate faults over long distances:
| Item | Our pick | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Fusion splicer | COMWAY A3+ (or Jilong 280T at Tk 96,000) | Tk 108,000 |
| Cleaver | Corelink W-08 One Step Automatic | Tk 7,500 |
| Stripper | Tawaa FT11301T 3-hole | Tk 1,500 |
| Power meter + VFL | Jilong OPM-22V | Tk 2,700 |
| Separate VFL | Optical Fiber VFL 20mW | Tk 1,500 |
| OTDR | Jilong KL-6300 (or Corelink Mini OTDR at Tk 34,000) | Tk 115,000 |

The Corelink Mini OTDR is the budget OTDR choice for shorter networks (10 m to 60 km range). The KL-6300 suits long trunk lines with its up to 300 km range and small event dead zone. All prices above are our current offer prices where an offer applies; the totals are simply the listed prices added up. Splice sleeves, cleaning supplies and a tool case are not in our listed range right now, so call or WhatsApp us if you need them.
Which Tools Should You Buy First?
- Buy the OPM and VFL first. They are cheap and solve most customer complaints: is there light at the ONU, and where is it leaking?
- Do not save money on the cleaver. Even a good splicer gives poor results with a bad cleave.
- Choose the splicer by job type. A mini FTTx splicer is light for pole and aerial work; a multi-motor splicer is better for trunk and joint closure work.
- Add an OTDR when your lines get longer. Once you have kilometres of backbone, finding a break by walking the line costs more than the tool.
- Keep a copper kit in every bag. A crimper and LAN tester save repeat visits for bad patch cables.
Basic Care Tips for Fiber Tools
- Clean the splicer's V-grooves and clamps with a soft brush or a cotton swab and isopropyl alcohol. Dust in the V-groove causes misalignment and high loss.
- Rotate the cleaver blade to the next position when cleaves start failing, and keep the blade and clamp pads clean.
- Follow the manual for electrodes. Electrodes wear with use; clean or replace them as the splicer's manual recommends.
- Keep dust caps on the OPM, VFL and OTDR ports, and clean connectors before testing.
- Never look into a fibre or a VFL. Laser light can damage your eyes, and live fibres may carry invisible light.
- Collect fibre scraps. Bare glass pieces are sharp and hard to see; put them in a scrap bottle, not on the floor.
- Look after batteries and heat. Charge splicer batteries before field work, and keep tools out of rain and direct sun.
