সংক্ষেপে: GPON and EPON are two different fiber standards: GPON (ITU-T G.984) runs at about 2.5 Gbps down and 1.25 Gbps up, while EPON (IEEE 802.3ah) runs at 1.25 Gbps in both directions. An XPON ONU supports both, so it is the safest buy if you are not sure what your ISP uses. Whichever ONU you choose, your ISP still has to register it on their OLT before the internet works.
Your ISP says "buy a new ONU", and every listing says GPON, EPON or XPON. This GPON vs EPON guide explains those words in plain language, why the ONU must match your ISP's equipment, and how to pick between a single-port and a Wi-Fi ONU, with our current ONU price list in Bangladesh.
What Is an ONU (or ONT)?
The ONU (Optical Network Unit) is the small box where the ISP's fiber ends in your home. It turns the light signal into normal Ethernet for your Wi-Fi router or PC. ONT (Optical Network Terminal) means almost the same thing; in Bangladesh most people just say ONU.
At the ISP's office or POP sits the OLT (Optical Line Terminal). One OLT port sends light down a fiber, and unpowered splitters divide it to many homes. That is the Passive Optical Network, the "PON" in GPON and EPON.
Most ONUs have a few status lights. On most models:
- PON steady: the ONU is registered with the OLT. Blinking for a long time usually means it is not registered yet.
- LOS red or blinking: loss of optical signal. The fiber, connector or line has a problem, so call your ISP. A new ONU will not fix a cut cable.
- LAN: shows a device (your router or PC) is connected by cable.
GPON vs EPON: The Key Differences
Both standards do the same job but speak different "languages", so a GPON-only ONU cannot register on an EPON OLT, or the other way round, even though the fiber and wavelengths are the same.
| Point | GPON | EPON |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | ITU-T G.984 | IEEE 802.3ah |
| Line rate | 2.488 Gbps down / 1.244 Gbps up | 1.25 Gbps down / 1.25 Gbps up (about 1 Gbps of data after encoding) |
| Wavelengths | 1490 nm down / 1310 nm up | 1490 nm down / 1310 nm up |
| How data is carried | GEM frames (GPON's own encapsulation) | Native Ethernet frames |
| Common split per port | 1:32 to 1:64, up to 1:128 on OLTs that support it | 1:32, often 1:64 with stronger optics |
| ONU is usually authorized by | Serial number (SN), sometimes a password or LOID | MAC address, sometimes LOID |
| Typical reach | Up to about 20 km, depending on optics class and split | About 20 km with PX20-class optics |
For a home user: one PON port is shared by every ONU on the same splitter tree. GPON gives the ISP more bandwidth per port, but your evening speed depends much more on your ISP's upstream bandwidth and how many customers share each port than on the GPON or EPON label.
A note on "10G": there are newer 10G PON standards (XG-PON, XGS-PON and 10G-EPON), and they need matching 10G ONUs. Many OLTs sold as "10G", including the ones in our OLT category, use 10G for the uplink port to the router or switch, not for the PON ports. All ONUs in this guide are standard GPON/EPON class.
What Is an XPON ONU?
XPON is not a third standard. It is a common name for an ONU that supports both GPON and EPON in one box. Most detect the mode automatically; on some you set it in the web page. Local ISPs in Bangladesh run both EPON and GPON OLTs, so if you are not sure which one yours uses, an XPON ONU removes the guesswork.
For ISPs, XPON also simplifies stock: one model can serve both EPON and GPON ports.
Why Your ONU Must Match Your ISP's OLT
- Same technology. GPON ONU on a GPON OLT, EPON ONU on an EPON OLT. An XPON ONU works with either.
- Registration (authorization). Your ISP must add the ONU to their OLT, usually by MAC address (EPON) or serial number, SN (GPON), both printed on the label. Until then the PON light keeps blinking and there is no internet.
- Brand compatibility. Some OLTs work best with ONUs of the same brand, and some ISPs only allow models they have tested. Ask your ISP before you buy.
- Connector type. Fiber connectors come as SC/UPC (usually blue) and SC/APC (usually green). Several single-port ONUs on our list are specified with SC/UPC ports. If your ISP's drop cable ends in APC, do not force it; use an SC/UPC to SC/APC patch cord (300 Tk).
- Signal level. Each ONU has an Rx sensitivity figure (for example -28 dBm on some of our XPON models). If the received power on its status page is close to that figure, expect drops; ask the ISP to check the line.
Single-Port ONU vs Wi-Fi ONU
| Type | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Single-port ONU (1x Gigabit LAN) | Most homes that already have a Wi-Fi router; ISPs buying in bulk | You need a separate Wi-Fi router, so two adapters to back up during load-shedding |
| Wi-Fi ONU (ONU + router in one) | Small flats, fewer boxes and cables, one device on the mini UPS | Budget models are 2.4 GHz only; if the Wi-Fi part is weak you cannot upgrade it separately |
| 4-port ONU | Small offices or shops with several wired devices | No Wi-Fi; add an access point or router for wireless |
A single-port ONU plus a good router is the most flexible setup: you can later move to Wi-Fi 6 or mesh without touching the fiber side. See which Wi-Fi router to buy or our Wi-Fi routers.

Checklist Before You Buy an ONU
- Ask your ISP: GPON or EPON? Which ONU brands do you accept? Will you register it, and is there a charge?
- Check the connector at the end of your drop cable: blue (UPC) or green (APC).
- Choose a Gigabit LAN port if your package is 100 Mbps or more; a Fast Ethernet (FE) port tops out at 100 Mbps.
- Decide: single-port ONU plus your own router, or an all-in-one Wi-Fi ONU.
- Note the power input (for example 12V 0.5A or 9V 0.6A) so you can match a mini UPS. Our guide to mini UPS for router and ONU explains how.
- Keep the box and label: the MAC and SN are what your ISP needs.

FAQs
Q: GPON vs EPON, which one is better?
A: GPON has a higher line rate (2.488 Gbps down / 1.244 Gbps up versus 1.25 Gbps both ways for EPON), so it gives an ISP more bandwidth per port. For a home user the better one is simply the one your ISP runs, because the ONU must match their OLT.
Q: Will an XPON ONU work with any ISP?
A: It works with both GPON and EPON OLTs, which covers most fiber ISPs. But the ISP still has to register it, and some OLTs or ISPs only accept certain brands, so ask your ISP first.
Q: ONU price in BD koto?
A: In our shop, single-port ONUs start at 650 Tk (DBC XPON, offer price) and most branded single-port models are 1,110 to 1,250 Tk. Wi-Fi ONUs are 2,100 to 3,200 Tk, and the 4-port model is 3,300 Tk (prices as of October 2026).
Q: Can I buy my own ONU, or do I have to take it from the ISP?
A: Many ISPs allow a customer-bought ONU as long as it is compatible and they register its MAC or SN. Some insist on their own model. Ask before you buy.
Q: ONU te LOS red light jole keno?
A: LOS means the ONU is not receiving an optical signal. The usual causes are a broken or bent fiber, a loose or dirty connector, or a problem on the ISP's side. Call your ISP; replacing the ONU will not fix it.
