How to Check a Used Laptop Before Buying: A Simple Checklist

A used laptop can be a great deal or an expensive mistake. Swapped parts, worn batteries and copy chargers are common problems. Use this checklist before you pay.

The Checklist

1. Specifications: open System settings and check the processor, RAM and storage match what you were told.
2. Storage health: make sure it is an SSD, not a hard disk, and check its health with a free tool such as CrystalDiskInfo.
3. Screen: open a plain white and a plain black image full screen and look for dead pixels, lines and bright spots.
4. Keyboard: type every key in Notepad, including the number row and arrows.
5. Touchpad: check both buttons, scrolling and two-finger gestures.
6. Battery: unplug the charger and use the laptop for 10 minutes. Check the battery health report (powercfg /batteryreport in Windows).
7. Charger: it should be the right wattage and should not get too hot. Copy chargers are common.
8. Ports: try every USB port, HDMI, headphone jack and the charging port.
9. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, webcam, microphone and speakers.
10. Body: check the hinges, screen frame and corners for cracks.
11. Warranty: get the warranty terms in writing on the invoice.
