Laptop Battery Health Check CMD: Step by Step
- Click Start and type cmd. Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator. (A normal Command Prompt or PowerShell window usually works too.)
- Type this command and press Enter:
powercfg /batteryreport - Windows replies with a line like "Battery life report saved to file path C:\WINDOWS\system32\battery-report.html". If you opened a normal (non-admin) window, the file is saved in your user folder instead, for example C:\Users\YourName\battery-report.html.
- To save the report somewhere easy to find, use the output option:
powercfg /batteryreport /output "C:\battery-report.html" - Open that file in File Explorer. It opens in your browser (Edge or Chrome). Nothing is uploaded; the report is only on your laptop.
Tip: you can copy the file path from the Command Prompt message and paste it into the browser address bar to open it directly.
How to Read the Battery Report
The report has several sections. These are the ones that matter:
Installed batteries
Near the top you will see the battery's name, manufacturer, chemistry (usually LiP or Li-ion) and three key numbers:
- DESIGN CAPACITY: how much energy the battery held when it was new, in mWh.
- FULL CHARGE CAPACITY: how much it holds now when charged to 100%.
- CYCLE COUNT: how many full charge cycles it has done. One cycle means using 100% of the capacity in total, so two half-discharges (100% to 50%, twice) count as about one cycle. On some laptops this field shows a dash or stays blank because the battery does not report it.
Calculate battery health
Battery health (%) = Full Charge Capacity ÷ Design Capacity × 100.
Example: Design Capacity 56,000 mWh, Full Charge Capacity 42,000 mWh. 42,000 ÷ 56,000 × 100 = 75% health. This laptop now gets roughly three quarters of the runtime it had when new, under the same usage.
Battery capacity history and life estimates
Further down, Battery capacity history shows how full charge capacity has changed over time. Battery life estimates compares the estimated runtime at full charge with the runtime at design capacity. These numbers are estimates based on your past usage, so treat them as a rough guide, not an exact promise.
You can also limit the report to recent days, for example the last 14 days: powercfg /batteryreport /duration 14.
What Your Battery Health Number Means

These bands are a practical guide, not an official rule from any laptop brand. Every battery loses capacity with age and cycles; a lower number alone is not dangerous. Swelling is different: if the touchpad is lifting, the bottom cover bulges or the laptop rocks on the table, stop using it on battery and have it removed.
Other Ways to Check Battery Health
- Brand tools: Lenovo Vantage shows battery details on ThinkPads; HP laptops have HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (often from the startup menu); Dell laptops have built-in diagnostics from the boot menu and SupportAssist. These can also flag a failing battery.
- MacBook: System Settings > Battery, then the info (i) button next to Battery Health shows Maximum Capacity. For cycle count, hold Option, click the Apple menu > System Information > Power.
- Windows Settings: Settings > System > Power & battery shows battery usage by app, which helps find what drains it, but it does not show health. For health, use powercfg.
Is It the Battery, the Charger or the Software?
Short backup is not always the battery's fault. Check these first:
- High brightness and background apps: look at Settings > System > Power & battery > Battery usage to see what is using power.
- Wrong or weak charger: a low-watt or poor-quality adapter can charge slowly, show "plugged in, not charging", or make the laptop slow down. Use the correct voltage and wattage for your model.

- Avoid heat. Heat ages lithium batteries faster. Do not leave the laptop in a hot car or on a bed or pillow where vents are blocked.
- Use a charge limit if you stay plugged in. If your laptop is on the desk all day, set a charge limit (around 80%) in the brand app or BIOS where available.
- Avoid running to 0% often. Charging somewhere between about 20% and 80% is gentler than full drains every day.
- Use the right charger. Match voltage, wattage and connector to the original.
