If you search for a refurbished laptop in BD, you will see the words "used", "refurbished", "pre-owned", "Grade A" and "second hand" used almost as if they mean the same thing. They do not. The label tells you how much checking the laptop has been through and what support you get after buying, and that matters more than the brand name on the lid.
This guide explains what each word really means, compares new, refurbished and used laptops side by side, and shows how we label our own laptops so you know exactly what you are paying for.
What Do New, Refurbished and Used Mean?
New laptop
A new laptop comes sealed in its box, has never been used, and normally carries the manufacturer's warranty through an authorised distributor. You get a fresh battery and the full warranty period. The trade-off is price: at the same budget, a new laptop is usually a lower class of machine than a used business laptop.
Refurbished laptop
A refurbished laptop was used before, usually in a company office abroad, and then checked, cleaned and fixed where needed before being sold again. In Bangladesh the word "refurbished" is used loosely: some sellers only wipe the laptop and reinstall Windows, others test every part and replace weak ones. That is why a grade or test report from the seller is more useful than the word itself.
Used (second hand) laptop
A used laptop is simply one that someone owned before. It may come from an individual seller on Facebook or a marketplace, or from a shop. It may be perfect, or it may have a weak battery, a replaced screen or a hidden motherboard fault. Usually it is sold as-is, with no testing and no support after the sale.
Refurbished vs Used vs New Laptop: Pros and Cons
| Point | New laptop | Refurbished / graded | Used (as-is) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Condition | Brand new, sealed | Used before, then tested and graded | Whatever the seller says |
| Performance for the money | Lowest at a tight budget | High: business-class Core i5/Ryzen 5, SSD | High, if you find a good one |
| Build quality at 25,000–45,000 Tk | Mostly plastic consumer models | Business models (EliteBook, Latitude, ThinkPad) | Mixed |
| Battery | New | Varies, should be checked | Unknown |
| Warranty | Brand warranty | Only if the seller offers it for that unit | Usually none |
| Risk | Lowest | Low to medium, depends on the seller | Highest |
| Best for | People who want a long brand warranty | Students, freelancers, offices on a budget | Buyers who can test a laptop themselves |
Why Used Business Laptops Give More for the Money
Business laptops such as the HP EliteBook, Dell Latitude and Lenovo ThinkPad were built for daily office use. They usually have stronger hinges, better keyboards and easier upgrades than cheap consumer laptops. Companies replace them in bulk after a few years, so good units reach the market at a fraction of their original price.
That is why, around 30,000–40,000 Tk, a used business laptop with a 10th or 11th Gen Core i5, SSD and a 14 inch screen is often a better daily machine than a new entry-level laptop. If you want to see how the three big business brands differ, read our EliteBook vs Latitude vs ThinkPad comparison.
How We Label Our Laptops: Pre-owned vs Grade A
Every laptop in our used laptop collection shows its condition label on the product page. We use two labels:
- Pre-owned: a used laptop in working condition. Read the condition and specs on the product page, and ask us about the battery or body if it matters to you.
- Grade A: a laptop we have tested and graded in our top grade. You can read how we test and what each grade means on our refurbished laptop grading page.
Warranty is a separate point. Some laptops, mostly Grade A models, show "15 Days Replacement" on their page. Many others, including some Grade A units, are sold without warranty. The rule is simple: if the product page does not show a warranty, there is no warranty on that unit. Our warranty policy explains how it works.

If you want the extra peace of mind, the Grade A unit with warranty is the safer pick at the same price. For more RAM, the ThinkPad T14 with 16GB also carries a warranty for just 2,000 Tk more. All prices for our other models are in our used laptop price guide and on the Used Laptop Offer page.
Which One Should You Buy?
- Buy new if you need a long manufacturer warranty, a brand-new battery, or a specific latest model, and your budget allows a good configuration (not a Celeron with a hard disk).
- Buy refurbished / Grade A if you want the most performance for your money with some protection. Students, freelancers, office staff and small businesses usually fit here. Choose a unit that shows a warranty if you are not comfortable testing a laptop yourself.
- Buy Pre-owned or used if the price difference matters most and you are able to check the laptop carefully, or you buy from a shop where you can test it before paying.

Checklist Before You Buy Any Used or Refurbished Laptop
- Check the processor generation and model in Settings or Task Manager, not only the sticker.
- Make sure the storage is an SSD, and check its health with a free tool such as CrystalDiskInfo.
- Run a battery report (powercfg /batteryreport in Command Prompt) and compare full charge capacity with design capacity.
- Test every key, the touchpad, USB ports, WiFi, webcam, speakers and headphone jack.
- Look at the screen on a white and a black background for dead pixels, lines or bright patches.
- Ask clearly what the label means and whether there is any warranty, and get it in writing or on the product page.

FAQs
Q: Refurbished laptop ar used laptop er moddhe parthokko ki?

Q: Is a refurbished laptop good for students in BD?
A: Yes, for most students it is the best value. A tested business laptop with a Core i5 and SSD handles classes, Office, browsing and light programming better than most new laptops at the same price.
Q: What does Grade A mean on your laptops?
A: Grade A is our top grade after testing. The exact checks and grade definitions are on our refurbished laptop grading page.
Q: Do all refurbished laptops come with warranty?
A: No. Only laptops that show a warranty on their product page have one, for example "15 Days Replacement" on selected models. Many used laptops are sold without warranty.
Q: How long does a used business laptop last?
A: It depends on the condition and how it is used, so nobody can promise a fixed number of years. Business laptops are built for daily office use, and the battery is usually the first part that needs replacing.
