What to Check on a Used MacBook Air M1

Use this checklist before paying for any second hand MacBook Air M1, from us or anyone else. For the general hardware checks that apply to every laptop, also read our used laptop checking guide.

1. Confirm it is really an M1

The 2020 Intel MacBook Air looks almost identical to the M1 model. Click the Apple menu and open About This Mac. It should say Chip: Apple M1. If it shows an Intel processor, it is not an M1, and it should be much cheaper.

2. Battery cycle count and condition

Hold the Option key, click the Apple menu and choose System Information. Open Power and look for:

• Cycle Count: how many full charge cycles the battery has done. Apple designs MacBook batteries to keep up to 80% of their original capacity at 1,000 cycles. Lower is better.
• Condition: should say Normal. If it says Service Recommended, the battery needs replacement soon.
• Maximum Capacity: also shown in System Settings under Battery on newer macOS. Higher is better.

A high cycle count is not always a deal breaker, but it should be reflected in the price.

3. Activation Lock and iCloud (most important)

This is the biggest risk with any used Mac. If the previous owner did not sign out of iCloud and turn off Find My, the Mac can stay locked to their Apple ID. After a reset, an Activation Locked Mac will ask for the previous owner's password, and you may not be able to use it.

• Open System Settings and check that no Apple ID is signed in, or that the seller signs out in front of you.
• Make sure Find My Mac is turned off.
• Check that the Mac is not enrolled in a company device management (MDM) profile. In System Settings, look under General for Device Management (called Profiles on older macOS) and make sure nothing unknown is installed.
• Ideally, the Mac should be freshly erased and set up as new in front of you.

4. Keyboard and trackpad

Open a text editor and press every key, including the function row and Touch ID button. Check that the keyboard backlight works. Click the trackpad in all corners and test two-finger scroll.

5. Display

Open a full white and then a full black image. Look for dead pixels, lines, pressure marks, bright spots near the edges, and worn coating. Check that brightness goes up and down smoothly. Also look at the screen hinge: it should hold the screen in place without wobbling.

6. Ports, charging, sound and camera

Charge from both USB-C ports, connect a pen drive or USB-C device, play music through the speakers, test the headphone jack and open Photo Booth to check the camera and microphone.

7. Body and serial number

Look for dents, especially at the corners, and check that the bottom screws are all there. The serial number in About This Mac should match the one printed on the bottom of the laptop.
