Laptop Second HDD Caddy (CD-ROM Slot): Overview

This Laptop Second HDD Caddy is an A-Grade replacement part that lets you remove the CD/DVD drive from a laptop and fit a second 2.5-inch SATA hard drive or SSD in its place. It is aimed at laptop owners and technicians who want extra storage or a faster SSD without giving up the existing main drive.

The caddy is listed for laptops from HP, Dell, Asus, Acer, Toshiba, Lenovo, Fujitsu and Samsung. It fits fully inside the laptop, and needs no cables, external power supply or software driver; the second drive connects just like the primary disk.

Key Features

  • Uses the optical drive bay: turn a rarely used CD/DVD slot into extra storage.
  • Accepts 2.5-inch SATA drives: install a hard disk for more space or an SSD for more speed.
  • 12.7mm caddy height: made for laptops with a 12.7mm optical drive bay.
  • Fully internal, no drivers: no cables, PSU or software needed, so nothing hangs outside the laptop.
  • Fast, reliable connection: the second drive works inside the laptop just like the primary HDD.

Best For

  • Adding an SSD for Windows while keeping the old HDD for files
  • Freelancers and editors who need more internal storage for projects
  • Repair technicians upgrading older office laptops

Things to Check Before Buying

  • Measure your laptop's optical drive thickness. Optical drives commonly come in 12.7mm and 9.5mm heights, and this caddy is 12.7mm.
  • Confirm your optical drive uses a SATA connection; very old IDE drives need a different caddy.
  • Check that the laptop has a removable optical drive (usually held by one screw on the bottom).
  • Move the bezel from your old CD/DVD drive to the caddy if you want a neat front finish.
  • If you install an SSD as the boot drive, it is usually better in the main bay and the hard disk in the caddy; some older laptops limit speed or booting from the optical bay.
