Seagate SkyHawk 2TB 3.5-inch Surveillance HDD: Overview
The Seagate SkyHawk 2TB 3.5-inch Surveillance HDD (model ST2000VX017) is a genuine Seagate hard disk for CCTV installers, shop owners and homes that need reliable storage for DVR and NVR recording. It offers 2TB of space on a SATA 6Gb/s interface in the standard 3.5-inch size.
It gives large, low-cost storage for CCTV recording, files and backups. Surveillance drives like SkyHawk are built for the constant 24/7 writing that security recorders do, unlike ordinary desktop drives that expect to sit idle much of the day. 2TB is a common size for small camera systems in shops, pharmacies, homes and offices.
Key Features
- Surveillance-class drive: designed for 24/7 CCTV recording workloads in DVRs and NVRs.
- 2TB capacity: a practical size for small and medium camera setups.
- SATA 6Gb/s interface: the standard connection used by DVRs, NVRs and desktop PCs.
- 3.5-inch form factor: fits the drive bay of most recorders and desktop cases.
- Genuine Seagate product: from a major hard disk manufacturer, model ST2000VX017.
Best For
The SkyHawk 2TB suits any setup that records video around the clock:
- CCTV systems in shops, pharmacies, markets and small offices.
- Home security recorders that run day and night.
- Replacement drives for DVRs or NVRs whose old disk has failed.
- Installers who need a dependable drive for client projects.
Setup and Usage Tips
- Check that your DVR or NVR has a free 3.5-inch SATA bay and supports this capacity; older recorders sometimes have a maximum drive size.
- After installing, format the drive from the DVR or NVR menu, not from a PC, so the recorder can use it.
- Set the recording mode (continuous, motion or schedule) to balance retention days against storage space.
- A 3.5-inch drive is made for desktops, DVRs and NVRs; it does not fit in a laptop, which uses 2.5-inch drives.
- Keep the recorder in a ventilated place and on a UPS or IPS; sudden power cuts during load-shedding can stress drives and corrupt recordings.
FAQs about the Seagate SkyHawk 2TB
Q: How many days of recording will 2TB hold?
A: It depends on the number of cameras, resolution, compression and whether you record continuously or on motion. Your DVR or NVR usually shows an estimate, or tell us your setup and we can help calculate.
Q: Can I use the SkyHawk in a desktop PC?
A: Yes. It is a standard 3.5-inch SATA drive, so it works in a desktop with a free bay, though it is optimised for surveillance recording.
Q: Will it fit my laptop?
A: No. Laptops use 2.5-inch drives or M.2 SSDs; this 3.5-inch drive is for recorders and desktops.
